A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
