Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
