Cameron Norrie earned the most important victory of his career by rebounding from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory represents Norrie's first ever win over a current world number one.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who is now the fifth UK male player in the record books to overcome a global number one. "Coming back from injury last year, I fell in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the biggest victory of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the global number one and likely the most in-form player in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 successes, which marked the top run of outcomes in the Spanish star's young professional path.

Alcaraz seemed to be advancing smoothly to success at the start as he eased past the opening set. Yet, the British contender steadily battled back back into the game by delivering with sharper placement and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding rallies. During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes.
