Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at the Age of 89.

This Oscar-nominated performer the celebrated Diane Ladd passed away aged 89.

The actress, whose roles spanned Chinatown, passed away at home at her Ojai, California home. The news was revealed via an announcement from her child, Academy Award-winning star her daughter Laura Dern.

Dern, who performed alongside Diane Ladd in several movies like Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my wonderful hero and my profound gift as a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside as she died.

“She was the most wonderful grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist along with empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were lucky to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Initial Roles and Rise to Fame

The start of her career included small roles on television series such as Gunsmoke whereas that decade featured her performing alongside the legendary Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, the year 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised dramatic comedy the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

In the 1980s, she appeared in the thriller Black Widow and humorous film National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and appeared on the sitcom Alice, a comedy program based on her earlier movie.

In the following decade, she was given a further best supporting actress nomination for her role in the David Lynch film the movie Wild at Heart where she acted as the parent of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The next year she was awarded an additional nod for her role in Rambling Rose which included Dern.

“This was the picture that Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she brought me and Laura to the UK for a special screening and a celebration for us,” Ladd said regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, and weeping, seeing us act.”

That decade also saw roles in comedy Cemetery Club reuniting her with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, with John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom another time. The decade also saw her score TV award nominations for work in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She persisted in performing with her daughter in comedy drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and the series by Mike White comedy-drama series the program Enlightened. She additionally starred with Sandra Bullock, a star in the film 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Subsequent TV appearances featured Ray Donovan, a drama plus Young Sheldon.

Filmmaking Ventures

Ladd also wrote and oversaw the comedy Mrs Munck featuring Diane Ladd and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him in a movie. Indeed, I am the sole female in recorded history to helm a film with her ex. I make a joke: ‘I tell women, should you desire retribution, guide your former spouse.’ Though I’m just teasing.”

Family Ties

She happened to be a family member of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration throughout my life”.

Back in 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a respiratory illness and advised she had just six months to live yet she recovered completely once her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.

“If you can take your pain and avoid letting it accumulate similar to a wound, instead use it to discover, to make the path clearer for you and those around, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
