Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

An freshly coined term surfaced a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for medical staff to treat a child who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities disputes these accusations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted harmony has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
