Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
