Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
