Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks proceed
Citizens have assembled across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative familiar with the discussions said that an night meeting of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The source said the morning session concluded without tangible results, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
- Post-war governance of the territory
Public Feeling
In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person are released no one will feel safe."
"Once we see all home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the dusk comes, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south, health workers said.
