RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.
The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.
British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
During December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
