Mikel Arteta feels assured that his squad can continue to cope with injury setbacks after revealing that star striker Kai Havertz is not ready for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been out since the summer following knee surgery. Hoped to be available at the start of this month, the manager stated the player hit a snag when advancing his recovery and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“Our experience helped us build a squad that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This update presents a dilemma for the midweek match against Brentford. Arteta must choose between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who came back off the bench as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also an option after 11 months out.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Additional concerns affect centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in central defence for the table-toppers.

The manager is convinced the £250m spend on squad depth during the summer has resulted in a far better place to deal with such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge

When asked if increased squad depth was benefiting their championship push, Arteta was emphatic. “Indeed, since the current term has been worse in the attacking line, and now the problems with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at the highest level. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the delay previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided more insight. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the required step and now the signs are like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to have him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, personally, I admire greatly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I observe his frustration being outside.”

“His fitness history is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I am eagerly awaiting to see him return around the team on the pitch because I believe it’s going to be a huge lift.”
