New York Introduces Online Platform for Citizens to Share Immigration Images After Arrests of 4 US Citizens

New York state attorney general has introduced a recent digital platform encouraging locals to share visual evidence of ICE operations throughout the state. This step comes just a day after a significant immigration operation disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass outcry.

US Citizens Detained During ICE Operation

A US congressman disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Rallies broke out in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Every New Yorker is entitled to live without fear," the attorney general wrote in a statement.

"For those who saw and captured ICE activity yesterday, I ask you to submit that footage with the authorities. We are committed to assessing these accounts and evaluating any violations of law."

Portal Features

The form offers fields to send images and video footage of the incident, along with a field to indicate geographic details. Prior to sending, submitters must check a checkbox that confirms that "the attorney general may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, including in a legal proceeding or government document."

Details of the Chinatown Raid

The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say involved more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a popular neighborhood of Manhattan where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are sold daily en masse – typically to visitors.

Recordings of Tuesday's raid reveal several covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a man, and pushing back bystanders. Throngs of locals pursued the officers along the roads. An armored truck was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

During a Wednesday press conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be arrested for no reason." He noted the persons were released on the following day with no accusations made.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he stated. "This constitutes a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is purely a excuse to generate turmoil for this administration to bring in the military to prevent unrest that they have created."

Widespread Condemnation

Fury over the immigration operation rapidly grew – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, including the state leader.

"Yet again, the current administration chooses oppressive displays that instill panic, not safety. It has to end," one mayoral candidate wrote.

NYC advocacy organizations spoke out also.

"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, covered personnel and riot gear to target local sellers trying to make a living. This operation had no connection to community security and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," remarked the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Official Guidelines

ICE policy bans the holding of citizens and the agency has said it does not arrest or detain citizens. However, independent reporting has found that over 170 citizens have been taken illegally by ICE since the start of the present government.

Ongoing Trend

Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide lately.

A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing ICE are ubiquitous including accusations of violence and inhumane treatment.

Most recently, a submission filed by advocacy organizations claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in government custody.
