New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
