The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
