The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

Whenever a teenage makes club history in a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
