"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness called for a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will forever be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
