Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
